Mission Staff Frequently Asked Questions
Is In My Shoes a religious organization?
Yes-In My Shoes is a Christian non-profit rooted in Catholic social teaching, but we welcome Mission Staff from all faith backgrounds who are passionate about serving others. Our core values-dignity, humility and grit-shape everything we do as we walk alongside women experiencing homelessness. We're a community driven by purpose, not perfection, and united by a desire to serve with love.
What is prayer life like in the home?
Prayer and reflection are woven into our daily rhythm. Mission Staff are encouraged to gather three times a day for prayer, grounding our community in faith and connection. We've found that sharing these moments together strengthens our bonds and helps us show up for each other-and for the moms we serve-with authenticity and hope.
Can I still go to church on weekends?
Absolutely! We know how important it is to stay connected to your faith community. Our House Lead works closely with the team to build a schedule that allows Mission Staff to attend their preferred church services as often as possible. Open communication is key-just keep us in the loop about what you need, and we'll do our best to support you.
Where will I live?
You'll be living right where the heart of our mission beats-alongside moms, babies, and other Mission Staff in our home in west Dallas. Our intentional community can welcome up to 13 moms and their little ones at a time, plus the Mission Staff team. This isn't just a place to stay; it's a place to serve, build relationships, and grow together.
Where will I sleep or what will my room be like?
Mission Staff share life-and space!-with one another, so you'll likely have a roommate during your year of service. Each staff bedroom is set up for three, with a twin bed and a bunk bed, and every room has its own private bathroom. The setup maximizes space so we can serve more moms, and you'll have what you need to rest and recharge. (Pro tip: ask to see a staff room during your overnight interview!)
Where will I get my meals or do I need to buy my own groceries?
We provide a weekly grocery budget for staples like meat, eggs, bread, fruits, and veggies-no processed foods or added sugar, since we're all about healthy habits for moms and Mission Staff alike. You'll have your own space in the pantry and fridge for any personal favorites or dietary needs, and you're welcome to pick up extras with your own funds. There aren't set meal times, so you'll prep your own meals-except for Tuesday Community Nights, when we all gather for dinner, connection, and fun.
What is Community Night?
Every Tuesday, we hit pause on the busy and come together as one big family. Community Night is a chance to share a meal, celebrate weekly wins, hold a house meeting, and dive into an activity or program as a community. It's one of the best ways we build authentic relationships and support each other on this journey.
What is Love and Logic?
Love and Logic provides practical tools and techniques that help adults achieve respectful, healthy relationships with their children (and other adults). Love and Logic: (1) Uses humor, hope, and empathy to build up the relationships, (2) Emphasizes respect and dignity for both children and adults, (3) Provides real limits in a loving way, and (4) Teaches consequences and healthy decision-making. Visit https://www.loveandlogic.com/ for more information.
What is Motivational Interviewing?
Motivational Interviewing is "a collaborative, goal-oriented style of communication with particular attention to the language of change. It is designed to strengthen personal motivation for and commitment to a specific goal by eliciting and exploring the person's own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion." (Miller & Rollnick, 2013, p. 29) We use Motivational Interviewing to help guide the moms who live in the home as they seek to change their lives and prepare for their future. For more information, see https://motivationalinterviewing.org/understanding-motivational-interviewing.
Do Mission Staff members receive days off?
Absolutely! We know rest matters. You'll get one day off per week (plus the night before and after), vacation days throughout the year, and access to a dedicated day-off apartment so you can truly recharge. Since our community is always "on," days off rotate, and you'll sometimes have weekends free-but flexibility is key.
Do I get holidays off?
Our doors stay open 365 days a year, including holidays. Mission Staff are the primary support for our moms, so we celebrate together as a community. First-year Mission Staff are asked to stay for Christmas, but you'll have the opportunity to take time off at Thanksgiving, Easter, or other holidays that matter to you by using vacation days.
Can my family and friends visit me?
Yes! We love when family and friends visit and get a glimpse of our vibrant community. While Mission Staff are encouraged to immerse themselves in life at In My Shoes, we know that staying connected to loved ones is vital. Just a heads-up: overnight guests aren't allowed in the home.
What will In My Shoes provide?
We want you to focus on serving and growing, so we cover your housing, food, and work-related transportation. You'll receive a $1,500 monthly stipend, plus reimbursements for health insurance, counseling, and your cell phone. There's also an Education Award you can apply for at the end of your service year, along with ongoing training, group counseling, and biannual retreats to help you develop personally and professionally.
Am I allowed to leave the house when I am not on duty?
Definitely! When you're off duty, you can head out-just stay available by phone in case anything comes up at the house (except on your official day off, when you're truly "off the clock"). Communication and teamwork help keep things running smoothly.
What can I do in my free time?
Your free time is yours to recharge, explore, and enjoy-just keep your team in the loop. If you're not on your day off, you might be called back in, so it's smart to stick close by. Go to church, exercise, discover Dallas, or just relax. Taking care of yourself helps you show up fully for the moms and the community.
Do I need to stay awake for overnight shifts?
Nope-you can head to bed as early as 10 pm during overnight duty. Just make sure all moms are home, doors are locked, and lights are off. Keep the duty phone by your bed and be ready to answer if it rings.
Do I need to have a driver's license?
It's not required, but having a driver's license is a big plus. Many Mission Staff responsibilities involve driving our community vehicles, so confident drivers are preferred. If you don't drive, you'll use public transportation (we'll provide a DART bus pass).
Do I need to bring my own car?
Bringing your own car is optional. We have community vehicles available for both work and personal use (just refill the gas and coordinate with the team). If you're car-free, you'll have access to a DART pass. Having your own car can give you extra flexibility to explore during your time off.
Does In My Shoes offer relocation assistance?
Yes! We provide financial support for relocation and we will pick you up from the airport when you arrive.
Are there medical considerations for service?
Serving at In My Shoes is immersive and can be demanding. We encourage applicants to honestly consider their mental and physical health needs. If you have an ongoing condition, it should be well managed so you can thrive and make the most of your service.
What do I need to bring when I move in?
We'll send you a detailed packing list before move-in. You'll also have access to our donation closets for essentials like clothes and toiletries. If you have favorite brands or specific preferences, you're welcome to bring your own.
Am I allowed to have my own substances on campus?
To keep our community safe and supportive, no alcohol or drugs are allowed in the house. If you choose to drink, it must be off premises-limit to two drinks if you plan to return that night, and please don't discuss alcohol use in shared spaces or with the moms. Vapes, juuls, or cigarettes are permitted, however never in community space/in front of the moms. Refrain from leaving your own vapes, juuls, and cigarettes around the house. Ultimately, it is allowed but not in or around our building, if needed a plan will be discussed.
What's on campus?
In My Shoes is on a secure property with gates that close each evening, a school, and a couple of other faith-based organizations. You'll get a chance to explore during your overnight interview and get a feel for the space that will become your home.
How do I handle my college loans?
Most federally guaranteed student loans can be put in forbearance or deferment during your service year. We're happy to provide any documentation you need to confirm your full-time service status.
Can I apply if I'm not a US citizen?
Mission Staff must be U.S. citizens or permanent legal residents. We're not able to sponsor visas at this time.
